Are All Wisdom Teeth Created Equal?

The simple answer is no. Not all wisdom teeth are created equal, nor do they all have to be extracted. Many times, if there is enough room in the jaw, and it does not interfere with the straightness of the teeth, it is perfectly ok to leave them intact.

Leaving a wisdom tooth in past the twenties can present problems and make them more difficult to remove. Their roots can become entrenched in bone and the one itself becomes more dense. If oral hygiene is not maintained, wisdom teeth can damage the teeth in front of them, and cause an infection, and be painful.

Evaluation of wisdom teeth will not only determine if they are causing problems currently, but if they pose problems in the future. A patient must their decision based on all the pros and cons that are presented to them.

When it comes to wisdom teeth, there is no ‘one size fits all’ rule. Each case needs to be evaluated individually and once all the options are presented to the patients, they can make the decision that suits them best.
