2nd Annual Every Child Deserves to Smile

Our 2nd annual Every Child Deserves To Smile took place on Saturday, November 1st. We couldn’t be happier and more grateful for all the hard work our staff put in! Dr. Paes, and our hygienists Dawn and Ellen, offered FREE Dental Cleanings and Exam to 15 children in our community. In addition, we sent kids home with Goody Bags filled with stickers, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Melinda Berroa and her husband Carlos Berroa extended themselves by donating their time to make balloons for the children. We would also like to thank Johanna, Christina, Tracie, Leah, Teresa, and Ellen for volunteering their time to help make today’s event a memorable one. Thank you to Senator Sue Serino for stopping by our office and recognizing community work.

Get Back to School with a Healthy Smile

Children learn best when they are healthy, and yet one of the most overlooked health factor is oral health. More than 51 million school hours are lost each year because of dental related illness. Untreated tooth decay causes pain and infections that may lead to problems that affect eating, speaking, playing, and learning. A study done by the American Journal of Public Health in 2011 concluded that children with poorer oral health status were more likely to experience dental pain, miss school, and perform poorly in school. These findings suggest that improving children’s oral health status may be a vehicle to enhancing their educational experience. Back to School with A Healthy Smile is a program created by Town Center Dental of Lagrange to provide parents of elementary school children with knowledge of their child’s dental health, as well as provide professional care to children without dental homes.

National Childrens Dental Health Month

The American Dental Association sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month every February to raise awareness about the importance of children’s dental health. Early childhood cavities is the number one chronic disease affecting young children and is 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever. Unfortunately, dental care is neglected in many low-income communities and leads to prolonged health problems and absences from school. Developing good oral hygiene at an early age and scheduling routine dental visits helps children establish a healthy start to a lifetime of clean teeth and gums. We strongly encourage parents to:

Stem Cells to Repair Teeth?

A Harvard-led team has recently found ways to trigger the regeneration of dental stem cells to form dentin, a hard tissue that is similar to bone and that makes up teeth. Current regeneration techniques involves isolating stem cells, culturing them in the laboratory, and then returning them to the host in hopes that they will repair damaged or missing tissue. But, David Mooney’s, Ph.D., a Wyss Institute Core Faculty member at Harvard University, is different. He hopes that his laser method will make it easier for practicing clinicians.
